Biblical stories of eighteen New Testament women who Jesus encouraged, empowered, and loved.

The Women Who Met Jesus, BookHow could a man who had no wife, no children, no home, no job, no money, and wandered the hills of Judea with twelve men relate to women of his time, much less women in the 21st century?

That's the question that led author, Dorothy Valc√°rcel, to search for biblical women whose lives intersected with Jesus. As she explored the lives of every woman Jesus met, she discovered that they faced many of the same challenges women encounter today.

Devotional Week 50 Monday

“An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid.   I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ.’”

Luke 2: 9, 10

New International Version

“He Is The Light”

“This is the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

John 1: 9

King James Version

“Light:” “Illumination.  Spiritual awareness from the Source.”

“A glimpse of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ causes in the heart a supreme genuine love for God.  This is because the divine light shows the excellent loveliness of God’s nature.”

Jonathan Edwards

Will I allow heaven’s light to shine throughout my life this Christmas and in the New Year?

“If there is light in the soul,

There will be beauty in the person.

If there is beauty in the person,

There will be harmony in the house.

If there is harmony in the house,

There will be order in the nation.

If there is order in the nation,

There will be peace in the world.”

A Chinese Proverb

“An age is called Dark, not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it.”

James A. Michener

Of all the holiday traditions I enjoy, one of the most special is seeing the twinkling of Christmas lights on neighborhood homes and businesses.

The sparkling sight of colored light or the gleaming of bright white lights illuminating the night sky is cheery and inviting.

When we read in Luke 2 about an angel from heaven announcing the birth of Jesus, the Biblical record notes that when heaven’s glory came to earth, light began to shine.  For thousands of years, the story of a promised Messiah had been passed down from generation to generation.

As we have already found out in our study of women from Genesis to II Kings, the darkness of people’s minds and their unwillingness to not only believe in the God of heaven and earth, but to follow His pathway, led to a suppression of light.

However, as shepherds took care of their sheep, an angel appeared and “light shone.”  Never again did planet earth have to be a place of darkness, for once Jesus arrived, He brought the radiant light of heaven with Him.

As the disciple John so beautifully recorded in John 1: 9, “There it was – the true Light was then coming into the world (the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light) that illuminates every person.” (Amplified Bible).  Here we find the key to why Jesus brought heavenly Light to earth.  And it is this Light that gives us the power to shine, too.

In one of Jesus’ first sermons, recorded in Matthew 5, He told His followers they were, “the light of the world.” (Matthew 5: 14).  But He also pointed out that the light which shines forth from each of us is not to bring attention to ourselves.

Instead, Jesus said in Matthew 5: 16, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your praiseworthy and noble deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Heavenly Light was brought to earth by Jesus and infused into our lives so we will bring honor to our Heavenly Father.  This is what the gift of the true “Light” is all about.

While Christmas lights bring brightness to a night sky, Heaven’s radiant light takes the darkness of our hearts and brings permanent Light into them.  May this Light fill your life today and in the coming year.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hymn of Light

“Son of the Father, born before times’ dawn,

Rise as our Daystar, hope of all the world.

O star of Jacob, light of heaven above,

Light up our darkness, shine upon us all.

Kings, kneel in homage; give to Christ, your king,

Gold, myrrh, and incense, faith, hope and love.

This day God’s glory dawns on Zion’s hill;

Now shall all nations walk in Zion’s light.”

James Quinn
